In November 1974, Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts were exploring the limestone hills at the eastern base of the Whetstone Mountains. They were looking “for a cave no one had ever found” and found it. The two kept the cave a secret until February 1978 when they told the property owners, James and Lois Kartchner, about their awesome discovery. Since unprotected caves can be seriously damaged by unregulated use, they knew the cave had to be protected. Tenen and Tufts spent several years looking into the possibility of developing the cave themselves. Some members of the Kartchner family lived in Tucson and were very impressed with the development and operation of Catalina State Park by Arizona State Parks. They decided to approach State Parks to see if the agency was interested in acquiring this outstanding resource.

The Mescal Movie Set is one of the most recognizable western cinematic towns on the big screen. This iconic set was home to the movies Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, and over 80 other westerns. Notable actors filmed walking its dusty boardwalks were Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, Sharon Stone, Clint Eastwood, to name a few. Mescal set is under new ownership and is currently being revitalized and rebuilt. Plans are in place to expand the 28 buildings with a  blacksmith shop, additional ranch settings, land office, boothill cemetery, and more. The revitalized movie set is open to the public. Western enthusiasts can take a tour with a knowledgeable historian. The set is also available for special events. First and foremost, Mescal is still a film set available for movies, television, documentaries, commercials, music videos, and more.

The Saint David Heritage Society is committed to serving the community of St. David and the San Pedro Valley as a society enabling the preservation and development of our historical and physical heritage, while promoting the cultural arts. We host several annual events and these have been instrumental in raising money to preserve and renovate our 1938 red brick elementary school building, among other projects.

We began life in 2007 as the Benson Arts Commission. To take a broader role in the arts community by expanding beyond Benson city limits, the San Pedro River Arts Council was established in the fall of 2009, and incorporated in Arizona as a nonprofit. Our vision is to create and support an environment in which visual artists have opportunities to learn, experiment and exhibit. Our mission is to support art education in our schools; foster the growth and development of artists; provide opportunities to display artistic achievement; and work with other organizations to strengthen the impact of the Arts Council on the community and artists.

The St. David Unified School District is located in the beautiful San Pedro Valley of Cochise County in St. David, Arizona. The community of St. David was established in 1877, and although there have been many changes over the years, it retains a unique atmosphere that can be traced to its foundations. A significant number of students currently enrolled in the district can trace their roots back to the original settlers. The community is proud of its small school environment. Situated on a two-school campus, the district serves about 400 students from pre-school through high school. Academics are the primary focus at all grade levels, and both the elementary and the high school are performing above average.

Our 13,000 square foot facility is comprised of several classrooms, two computer labs, and a learning center that serves as a virtual library. One classroom serves as a science and art lab, while another is equipped specially for our Allied Health nursing labs.
